Cleaning/Maintaining

Does Silver Oxidize?

Silver jewelry can tarnish or oxidize over time when it interacts with oxygen molecules. This is a natural chemical process that occurs, but its speed can be influenced by how the jewelry is stored and maintained.

Wearing your jewelry:

Wearing your silver jewelry can actually slow down the tarnishing process. The natural oils in your skin create a barrier that prevents oxygen molecules from binding to the silver. Unlike brass jewelry, which may cause irritation and wear off its plating, wearing silver jewelry helps maintain its beautiful appearance.

Storing your jewelry:

To preserve your silver jewelry, store it in a cool, dry environment such as a jewelry box or a silk jewelry bag (included with every purchase). Improper storage can accelerate tarnishing by exposing the jewelry to oxygen molecules. Using a jewelry box limits oxygen exposure, and adding a silica gel packet helps regulate moisture levels. Remember to replace the silica gel packet every few months. Avoid storing your jewelry in open environments or in direct sunlight, as this can speed up tarnishing/oxidization.

Maintaining and cleaning your jewelry:

Regular cleaning is recommended every few months, depending on how often you wear your jewelry. A micro sonic jewelry cleaning machine with appropriate cleaning solution effectively removes dirt and buildup. However, be cautious when using this method with jewelry containing stones, as it may dislodge them. A polishing cloth, often provided with purchases, is excellent for cleaning surface tarnish, fingerprints, and dirt, restoring the jewelry's shine. For heavily tarnished pieces, a magic eraser sponge can be an inexpensive and effective solution, quickly removing years of oxidation.
